Found remedy for problem with Retrospect Express HD

The Dantz Retrospect Express HD software that came with my Maxtor OneTouch 300 GB external backup drive suddenly starting giving me these errors lately:

Retrospect has encountered a serious error: Assertion failure at "tbuffer.cpp-373"

Finally got a chance to look it up and found this page on the Dantz web site:

Users of Retrospect Express HD may see this error when Retrospect attempts to reclaim disk space during a backup.

To fix this error, delete the Restore Point catalog file.

1) On your destination hard drive (the Maxtor drive) locate the folder called “Retrospect Restore Points”.

2) Inside that folder delete the file named RestorePoint.rbc

3) Open Express HD or push the button on your Maxtor drive to begin a backup. Retrospect Express HD will recreate the RestorePoint.rbc file, fixing this error.

After I have the file deleted, it works again.

Oh man, thank you for sharing this. I’ve been getting this error for a while now and sat down this morning to try to figure it out. You probably saved me a whole bunch of time. Thanks again.

I would suggest not to delete the File, but to rename it to “RestorePoint.rbc.bak” or just move it out of the folder, on the off-hand chance this does not fix the issue. Just a suggestion.
