Sick of being sick

I’ve been sick since Wednesday. It peaked on Wednesday night when I had a fever of 103.4, but every night since then I’ve had a fever. Yesterday, my wife took me to the doctor. Amazingly, the wait was 2 hours – we actually signed in and then went for dinner and came back! I was eventually seen by a physician’s assistant. The throat culture was negative for strep so they concluded that it was a virus. I got a prescription for a cough tablet called Benzonatate and advised to take Advil for the fever and Robitussin DM, Cepastat (which I couldn’t find so I tried Cepacol), and salt water gargles for the cough and sore throat. For the past two nights, I added to this pharmacopeia some NyQuil LiquiCaps which I think worked quite nicely – last night, I slept for 13 hours!

The annoying thing about this particular bug is that I often feel pretty good in the afternoon but the fever always comes back and hits me in the evenings. I keep waking up in a pool of sweat.

  1. Ugh, hope you’re getting better! One time I was pretty sick, and tested negative for strep, but wasn’t getting better, so I went back to the doctor, and it turned out I had mono! I hope the stuff they gave you helps.
