Juicy

Better Than Ezra was once one of my favorite bands. “Deluxe” and “Friction, Baby” were two of my favorite albums. “How Does Your Garden Grow?” was a huge disappointment for me, although I grew to like it a little bit more over time, at least some of the songs. I confess that I didn’t even buy “Closer”.

Today we were in the car and we heard this incredibly annoying discoey song with an irritating melody and a super high male falsetto voice apparently called “Juicy” and I wondered who performed this awful song. The high falsetto voice initially made me think Gnarles Barkley, but as the song progressed, I knew that wasn’t right. I was shocked to hear the song again this evening and the DJ announced that it was Better Than Ezra. Huh? The same band that did “Good” , “Desperately Wanting”, and “This Time of Year”??? Yep, “Juicy” is the first single off their new album, “Before the Robots“.

Sheesh – what happened to Better Than Ezra? They started out as a rock band and they seem to have a totally different sound now. I’m hoping it’s just a phase. It wouldn’t be the first time a band tried a different sound, crashed and burned, went back to their original sound, and continued to make good records. Remember “I Was Made for Loving You” by Kiss?

Hopefully, this isn’t making me sound like too much of an old timer. Following along with the “Juicy” theme, I wouldn’t be surprised if this post gets me flame-broiled by a bunch of MySpaceans.

  1. Somehow I ended up on your site while looking for something Better Than Ezra-related. Anyway, yes, “Juicy” is pretty annoying. But since I ended up here, I just wanted to say that the song sounds nothing like the rest of their latest cd. I think the song is basically like a joke. And no, it’s not the band’s first single from the album. They already had another hit single released before this one. They didn’t ever plan on releasing the song but “Desperate Housewives” contacted them and wanted to use it for their promos so they just decided to release the song as a single since it had publicity already. Their sound is still rock with pop elements.

Oh, and do yourself a favor and buy “Closer” from Amazon.com or something. It’s nothing like Garden and it’s one of the best cds I’ve ever bought. It’s a great mix of rock and pop. Anyone who listens to it loves it. I promise you will love the songs on it. The melodies are second-to-none. It would have been huge for them, but their record company went bankrupt weeks after the release and the album got no videos or promotion. Hell, the only released hit single from that cd is one of the only tracks I don’t flat-out love (but it is still decent cheezy-pop). I can’t believe I just typed that much crap for no apparent reason. I guess I just wanted to let you know while I was here that they are still a really good band. -Later

  2. Just wanted to say that I couldn’t figure out who sings the Juicy song, and I was looking everywhere in the stores for it because my little girls and I love that song. Now I know who sings it and the name of the CD, so I’ll be purchasing it!!! I just googled it tonight because, I had forgotten about the song, as it hasn’t been played at all on the radio since last summer, but I just saw it on a food commercial, and decided to try again..Thanks!!

  3. I absolutely DESPISE the song “Juicy”… Better Than Ezra’s songs from the past were great. Friends around a campfire with an acoustic guitar singing “Extra Ordinary” is always a blast.. but “Juicy”? Ugh… if someone had assembled a team of songwriters for the sole purpose of composing an athem for drag queens “Juicy” is what they would have come up with. Creepy gross song.
