Every now and then I hear of somebody who set up Trixbox/Asterisk or who is planning to. I always wonder if Asterisk is something that is simply geek chic to have or if there really are some compelling advantages to having a PBX in your house?

Asterisk rocks. I have mine running on an unused older tablet. I set it up with a free direct incoming dial number from stanaphone, and purchased about 20 bucks worth of dialling out time too just for fun. I currently have Vonage and it costs me like 33 bucks a month with tax. I use less than 500 min per month currently. The average provider costs about 1 to 1.5 cents per min. As you can see, it can save some money and the expandability and features cant be matched.
NOt to mention i have my gizmo account set up and i answer my calls on gizmo client and use that to recieve calls.
Its really for folks who need multiple extensions, etc but i m loving it and the tutorial at nerdvittles is the best start there!
