Yeah, that Arc article is not dated, but there's another one that is: http://www.paulgraham.com/arcll1.html - so Arc was conceived as early as 2001. So it's been five years. Around twice his estimate of 2 or 3.

I wonder why he's not motivated anymore? Hmmm, maybe the tremendous pile of money he undoubtedly made from selling ViaWeb to Yahoo?

I guess the thing that sort of bugs me about some of Paul Graham's essays is that they begin to take on an infomercial like quality. "I did it and so can you. Step 1: Use Lisp. Step 2: ???. Step 3: Profit"

Arc been vapor for a long time. I've always assumed he wasn't really working on it seriously. PG acknowledges in his more recent essays that he doesn't really have any motivation to work hard any more.

Personally, I'm not sure how useful comparisons of the pure programming part of a project are. I'd estimate that I spend 5-10 times as long dealing with the process aspects of launching a new feature as I do actually writing code. That is likely to be the more significant productivity advantage of startups over large companies.
