  • The Tiger Team at Yahoo is dedicated to providing highly skilled, senior engineers to a variety of projects. Tigers provide short-term resources to product engineering teams that need additional resources for projects deemed important by engineering VPs.
  • Extensive work on the infrastructure for Yahoo’s Project Panama, a company-wide initiative to develop a new ad-serving platform with more powerful features and a lower maintenance cost. C and C++.
  • Wrote XUL and JavaScript code for a major rewrite of the sidebar and bookmark synchronization code in the del.icio.us Bookmarks Firefox extension.
  • Developed C and C++ code for server components for serving Yahoo Publisher Network ads in syndication feeds (e.g.: RSS, Atom). Came up with the idea of using plug-ins for popular blog software to make it easier for publishers to add Yahoo Publisher Network ads to their pages and feeds and then developed such plug-ins in PHP and Perl for the WordPress and Movable Type publishing platforms.
  • One of three managers in Tiger Team, responsible for monitoring projects, giving technical advice, managing up to 7 direct reports, and recruiting new team members.
  • Won Platform Organization’s “You Rock!” award.

May 2002 to June 2005

  • Developed photo cropping system, consisting of Ajax JavaScript web interface for editing and reviewing photos, backend data store, photo upload, and automatic face detection using Intel’s OpenCV library (which I ported to FreeBSD).
  • Developed backend system for storing data for personality test results. This was a client/server RPC-like system that used a Yahoo-proprietary library for network transport and MySQLfor data storage.
  • Developed mechanisms for detecting and preventing abuse of the site by spammers.
  • Served as the group’s liaison to Yahoo’s security group, managing and consulting on security and abuse issues.
  • Served as group expert in several key Yahoo technologies - including Yahoo’s media database and network communication and data replication technologies.
  • Served as group expert in Perl and C++ programming.
  • Periodically served week-long 24×7 on-call (pager) duty.
  • Gave tech talk on Mozilla and Firefox, started a Firefox intranet page and mailing list with 180+ members..

    Your software will also interface directly with the vital machinery, people and processes essential to shipping millions of packages each year. You should be excited about developing new systems from the ground up and driven to discover and utilize existing components. We will rely on you to be responsible for end-to-end functionality of your software, collaborating productively with other engineers and scientists on a results-focused, multi-disciplinary team.

    Qualifications

    Your strong grasp of computer science fundamentals will serve as the basis for your technical approach and you should have at least five years of experience in most of the following areas:

    Distributed, service-oriented architecture
    Message bus architectures and implementations
    Transaction-based systems
    Construction of mission-critical, large-scale systems
    UNIX or LINUX; object-oriented design and coding in C++; SQL; Perl; and data modeling.
    Experience in setting up and managing automated deployment of software and a good grasp of the n-tier architecture is very helpful.
    Knowledge of statistics, applied math such as queue theory, or operations research techniques is a plus.
    Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
    Ability to communicate and discuss software components in simple terms with managers and in great detail with other software development engineers.
    Position is in Seattle, Washington.
    Some travel may be required.
