Treo 650
The Treo 650 is a fantastic device. I got mine direct from PalmOne (Pa1mOne?
) on 2005-04-29. Here’s my Treo blog post archive.
My device and plan info
- Treo 650 GSM unlocked, firmware 01.71, software 1.20-ENA
- Cingular 450 minutes ($39.99) with MEdia Net Unlimited ($24.95)
Keyboard shortcuts
Option + Left Shift = Find Option + Right Shift = Toggle bright/dim Option + P = Adjust brightness
(although I typically use
Option + Right Shift, mentioned above,
which is a much easier way to dim the screen quickly)
Shift + Space = Tab Option + Up/Down = Scroll (in some apps, notably the Launcher) S + Alt + Alt + Alt + Alt + Space = Graffiti shortcut symbol
(although I prefer Shortcut 5)
Backspace = Back in Blazer (web browser)
Resets
- Warm reset (disable startup hacks; often gets you out of a reset loop) – hold Up while resetting
- Hard reset (wipes out all your data) – hold red power button while resetting
Favorite programs
Also see this older page of mine which lists some of these programs but also provides screenshots and descriptions.

Card Export 2 –
Why carry around a separate SD card reader when you can use your Palm, which is always in your pocket? Card Export 2 makes your Windows PC recognize your Palm’s SD card as if it were in a card reader, and requires no software to be installed on the Windows PC. Just put your Palm in the cradle, launch Card Export 2, and tap Connect to Desktop, and your PC will see a new USB device.

Can launch regular applications or DAs, so no need for a separate DA launcher. With a swipe or a button press, I get a menu of my most frequently used programs and DAs. This is a quick way for me to launch Card Export 2 or QuickSync DA. With a swipe or a button press, I can toggle back to the previously used application (much like Alt-Tab in Windows).

Pocket Tunes –
A great MP3/WAV/Ogg player. The RealOne player that comes with Palms is very basic, lacking in basic features like the ability to browse by artist, album, genre, etc… Pocket Tunes has this and more and comes with a plugin for Windows Media Player that helps you copy tunes to your device. This program comes in both Basic and Deluxe versions. (Note: Only Deluxe version can listen to Shoutcast feeds)

Software I’m playing with
- u*Blog – decent mobile blogging app (freeware!)
- KsToDo
- PlanMyDay
- Crony: cron for PalmOS 5
- TuSSH
- Initiate
- TAKEphONE
- BMeter
- Mergic Ping
- Memory Info
- The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP)
- Adobe Reader for Palm OS – for converting PDF files to a Palm-readable format; for native PDF viewing, I believe you need Picsel, which is not widely available.
Software I’d like to try
- HBlogger
- CardTXT
- Treo Nav Set
- TreoNaviText
- VolumeRocker
- SiEd
- Getdeblu
- Palm Pascal compiler
- B’Alerted PhoneInfo
- pToolSet
- Slap
- Picsel viewer – for viewing PDFs natively
Software I didn’t care for
- Plogit – Open-Source PalmOS Blogging Client. I wanted to like it, but it’s too immature at this point. Not stable and not a lot of features, including no 5-way support.
- Life Balance
- pssh – TuSSH seems nicer to me.
- Free MobileDB and Checklist from Handmark – after installing these, my Treo 650 went into a reset loop and going to the application launcher caused an immediate reset. I tried to clean up with FileZ, but all I manged to do was kill my network and phone access, making it necessary for me to do a hard reset. My advice is to install these apps with caution and do a backup before!
- HotDate – simple little appointment/todo viewing application, no support for 5-way navigator.

How to remove Favorites buttons for built-in apps (e.g.: RealPlayer) from the Phone app favorites pages

See this post for a few ideas.
How do I do the shortcut symbol? How do I edit my shortcuts – there’s no Prefs panel?
S + Alt + Alt + Alt + Alt + Space = Graffiti shortcut symbol
(although I prefer Shortcut 5 because Palm for some odd reason removed the ability to customize shortcuts)
Default files installed
Since I just had a hard reset, I figured I'd write down which files come with the device, so that I know not to delete these later.

Thanks — your info was useful but I still have a question. How do you edit the shortcuts? Whenever I type “sec.” followed by a space, it automatically changes to “seconds.” It’s driving me crazy.
call log disapeared(double press on phone button) after installing keyguardTime + any ideas as to how to get it back?
Thanks
How I shall user registred in your site?
How I download programs?
[...] A few days ago, my Treo 650 fell on to pavement and the antenna snapped off. I ordered a new short antenna from TreoAntenna.com but in the meantime, I’ve managed to get good reception by clipping an alligator clip with a short length of wire on to the point on the circuit board where the antenna connects. Originally, I had the other clip connected to the antenna itself, but it fell off and I realized that reception was just as good without it. [...]
[...] As previously mentioned, my Treo 650 antenna broke and for the past week I’ve been using it with an improvised antenna using an alligator clip. [...]
[...] I’m probably going to take the plunge and replace my Treo 650 with some kind of Windows Mobile device, since the Windows Mobile devices always seem to have more [...]
Loved reading through your site. Alot of great info. I have a question for you since you appear to be intelligent and experienced with “playing around” with the inner workings of the Treo Machine. I am not a rich person (yet) and I recently downloaded FileZ. Loved the program for resetting my VersaMail stuff, BUT… can I use this to delete RealOne Player and other UNWANTED’s from my Treo650? After all, the machine belongs to me, not Palm and every time I want to get rid of something, I get the frightening message: “Changing this setting can crash the device. Only change this if you know what you ae doing. Are you sure you want to change this?”
Well, I’m sure I want the program gone but I don’t need an expensive paperweight. Any experience with deleting things on the ROM of a Treo?
I would greatly appreciate a response.

P.S. Loooved your camera uses! Great for all Homeschoolers, such as myself! It’s become so useful, I couldn’t live without it and my Canon is gettin’ jealous
KiSMoore,
FileZ unfortunately will not allow you to delete things from the ROM of your Treo. It’s a lot more complicated than that. There’s a lengthy process whereby you can create custom ROM images for a Treo and you can pick the programs you want.

Good luck!
when i am clicking on the call log, my phone resets , and i can not reach the call log. is there a way how to delete the call log ,without seeing the call log screen ?
Not many problems until this morning (funny, my 90 day Palm warranty just expired).
Every time I touch the screen to hang up a call or touch the phone button I get a reset.
Any ideas?
I’m having the same problem. Please help.
I did a hard reset and then synced my Palm without using the automatic backup. All is well now, but in all honesty, I had to do the hard reset several times before it worked. Kinda sucks since I have to redo some of the Treo’s prefs but the Loop Resetting is gone and it’s been worth it. Now I just go into my sync program and individually install wanted programs from my backup file instead of letting it all be done automatically. I’ve only been adding a few at a time, this way if it begins to happen again, I’ll know who the culprit is. Hope this helps. Sorry for the misspells…. been canoeing all day and very tired.
Have a good one
Hi,
How can I insert the @ symbol using my treo 650? Thanks!
Press the key that you use to toggle between numbers and letters (I think it’s the numbers key), then hit the @ key.
To Barbara:
Use Autocorrect patch to prevent Treo from changing secs->seconds, i->I etc.
