On my Win2k system, attempting to upgrade iTunes results in it hanging at the “Installing QuickTime” step and then eating 100% of my CPU. So I found this tip at the iTunes for Windows forums, but then installing the standalone QuickTime player also hangs and eats 100% of my CPU.
So then I tried uninstalling my existing QuickTime first (from Add/Remove programs). It asked me if I wanted to uninstall just the programs or uninstall everything (NOT RECOMMENDED – things could break, your computer may combust, your wife may leave you, etc…) so I selected just the apps. Attempt to install QuickTime again. Hang. 100% CPU. Reboot AGAIN.
Next time I uninstalled QuickTime and told it to nuke everything. Now, my next attempt to reinstall the standalone QuickTime succceeded. Ah, progress. So time to install iTunes again. HANG. Erggh.
In general, iTunes for Windows is pretty smooth, but this sucks. And it’s not just me – others are having this problem as well:
