PearPC and Darwin

So the pager went off again last night and woke me up. While I was waiting to see if a very long bzip operation would resolve the issue satisfactorally, I had a bit of time on my hands….

First, I downloaded PearPC, which is a PowerPC architecture hardware emulator, OS not included.

Booting into Mac OS X would’ve been much cooler, but since I don’t own Mac OS X, I downloaded a Darwin ISO from http://developer.apple.com/darwin/. (Darwin is the open-sourced portion of Mac OS X and basically is the UNIX internals of Mac OS X without the GUI – more specifically I believe it’s a FreeBSDish UNIX on top of a Mach microkernel).

Here’s a screenshot:

Mac OS X would’ve been so much sexier. Alas, if there is a PowerBook in my future, then maybe I’ll have Tiger running on here in a few weeks.

  1. This sounds really cool. I think I´ll test that, too. Could you describe your harware, shortly ?

Incidentally, I discovered last night that I can also run X11 inside the Darwin and it’s usable, although I could get the same effect out of running Cygwin or Knoppix or Linux. I’d love to try booting Mac OS X, but I don’t have it to try.
