EarthLink sucking lately?

For a couple of weeks, my Internet connection has become extremely flakey. Goes down several times a day for several minutes at a time. Extremely frustrating.

I guess it could be my WRT54G, which appears to keep losing the PPPoE connection, but I suspect that it is EarthLink because I’ve seen the “DSL” light go out (and sometimes flash) on my ZyXEL DSL modem. So probably this is an issue with EarthLink DSL or the phone line quality.

I am out of my contract with EarthLink, so I am dangerously close to contemplate switching to SBC Yahoo! or Sonic.net.

Thoughts?

  1. I had that problem for a while as well, but it wasn’t earthlink’s fault. Remember, earthlink is just a reseller for the local carrier (SBC if you’re in the bay area). There was a problem at the head end that was causing the signal to be dropped, but all that earthlink could do was file a trouble ticket against it.

Eventually I swallowed my pride and general distain for Satan’s Broadcasting Company and switched back to SBC. I still get occasional drops, but no where near the number or duration that I was getting.

I’m sure there’s grounds for some sort of lawsuit out of this, but it’s not worth my time.

  2. I would tell you to call, email or chat online with Earthlink Technical Support, but I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy! It’s truly horrible customer service. Even if it was their fault, they would find a way to tell you it’s your fault, even when another ISP works with no problems.
