Listening to KGO AM 810 on the way home from work, Gene Burns was talking about some awful comments that Paul Harvey had made. I probably wouldn’t have believed it, had he not replayed Mr. Harvey’s comments (starts at 11:45).
I’d love to find a transcript of the comments to link to, but here’s what he said in a nutshell:
- America did not respond aggressively enough to the events of 9/11. Even though most of the hijackers were from Saudia Arabia, we “gave old pals a pass” and held back from attacking them.
- Not reacting strongly showed that we were weak (in his words, borrowing from Winston Churchill, “made of sugar candy”), and was contrary to our glorious history.
- One example of such glorious history was how we dropped the A-Bombs on Japan, killing 150,000 people and ending World War 2
- Another example of this glorious history was how early pioneers of this country handed out smallpox-infected blankets to Native Americans in order to fulfill their manifest destiny.
- Another example – keeping slaves, which was necessary to build our great country.
- Nowadays, we’ve become weak because of our guilt and he fears that we are doomed to lose our country to people who feel no such guilt.
These comments were simply astonishing to me. I can only hope that Mr. Harvey is senile.
You know, I remember hearing something on KGO about us being made of sugar, but I wasn’t paying attention. Maybe I should’ve! Those comments are bizarre. (And I’m glad your site is back to normal!)

TRANSCRIPT
————
It’s been a noisy, bloody, ugly, overnight in Baghdad. Coordinated car bombings, one after another after another. One in a crowded, central shopping district. Maybe a half a hundred dead. I don’t know how many dying.
It’s Sunni Arabs killing Shiite Arabs and as many of us as possible. Sunni Muslims are dominating Iraq for decades under Saddam Hussein, convinced they can outlast us now. Defense Secretary Rumsfeld goes up the hill this morning to update an anxious Congress.
For what it’s worth, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Winston Churchill told the American people “we didn’t come this far because we are made of sugar candy.” And that reminder was taken seriously.
We’ve proceeded to develop and deliver the time bomb, the bomb. Even though roughly 150,000 men, women and children perished in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With a single blow, World War II was over.
Following New York’s September 11th Pearl Harbor, Winston Churchill was not here to remind us that “we didn’t come this far because we’re made of sugar candy”.
So we mustered our humanity. We gave old pals a pass. Even though men and women from Saudi Arabia were largely responsible for the devastation of New York and Pennsylvania and our Pentagon. We called the Saudi Arabians our partners against terrorism. And we sent men with rifles into Afghanistan and Iraq and kept our best weapons in their silos.
Even now we stand there dying, daring to do nothing decisive because we’ve declared ourselves to be better than our terrorist enemies. More moral, more civilized. Our image is at stake we insist.
But we didn’t come this far because we’re made of sugar candy.
Once upon a time, we elbowed our way onto and across this continent by giving smallpox infected blankets to Native Americans. That was biological warfare. And we used every other weapon we could get our hands on to grab this land from whomever. And we grew prosperous. And yes we greased the skids with the sweat of slaves.
So it goes with most great nation states which feeling guilty about their savage pasts, eventually civilized themselves out of business and wind up invaded and ultimately dominated by the lean, hungry, up and coming who are not made of sugar candy.
Paul Harvey……Good day!
Hey DP, thanks for posting the transcript!
