Dapper upgrade successful

My Dapper upgrade seems to have gone off without a hitch.

My first impression is that the system does in fact seem snappier. It’s nice to have Firefox 1.5.0.3 and Firefox seems way more responsive than before. The Ubuntu desktop is pretty snappy too and has been freshened up a bit and is quite pleasant.

Still looking around to see what other new goodies are there.

  1. The speed is a HUGE improvement, especially boot time which at times felt like it was rivaling XP on a 500 MHz Celeron with 96MB of RAM! The move to FF 1.5.0.3 also carried with it better memory management as I don’t see that or Liferea sucking up every available scrap of memory and then grinding everything to a halt.

Dapper is their best release yet. Glad they took the extra time to polish! 😀

  2. Vast improvement.

I had firefox 1.5 running from /opt but it was buggy as hell, It works nicely and flawlessly (so far) in Dapper.

Seems very slick and stable, but I havent really started thrashing it yet 🙂

  3. I have to agree! This release is the best yet. I am loong forward to putting it on my new laptop if I ever get it. I am glad I switched from Mandriva (old mandrake) and gave Ubuntu a try!

  4. Hey Marc, did u read the APress book on Ubuntu? was it good? I am still waiting for the Ubuntu CDs, can’t wait to check it out.

  5. Nope, I haven’t actually read the book. Ubuntu has been straightforward enough for me that I haven’t had to consult any books yet, knock wood.

  6. Marc, howdy! Thanks for your comment on my site, Around the Corner-MGuhlin.net/blog

I have fallen in love with Xubuntu Desktop, even though I have the processor to run Gnome without concern. It’s gotten more beautiful than before, is snappier, and customizing XFCE just seems…easier.

Regardless, the desktop is a work of art. And, I have to concur that everything is running snappier!

    Take care,

  7. I don’t know if you ever used the commandline panel in Breezy, but I liked it alot better then the Deskbar one that ships with Dapper. Deskbar just seems really really bloated to me, but I really only want to type in terminal commands such as ‘opera’, ‘kopete’, and ‘sudo gedit xxxx’ as to not busy up a terminal tab.

Anyway, saw your sig randomly appear in my LJ and thought I’d throw a comment back at you.

  8. I also really like Dapper. I have an IBM ThinkPad T42 and Ubuntu automatically setup the wireless access for it. Fedora Core 5 did not which is why I installed Dapper.

  9. Wow, so many great comments about Dapper Drake. I really can’t wait to recieve my free CDs. Or if I really get itchy, I’ll just download the ISO image from Ubuntu. I can’t download it just yet cause of my work.

Still, I’m dying for my Dapper CDs.
