My phone is driving me crazy

We are getting ridiculous amounts of bogus phone calls. Just this morning:

We’re already done the donotcall.gov thing so we’re in the middle of our 30 day period, but even after that I’m not convinced that these folks are law-abiding citizens who subscribe to the donotcall list. I’ll probably try telezapping these folks and if that doesn’t work, I might just get rid of our landline. We don’t use our phone a heck of a lot anyway and I don’t want to pay $20 or $30 a month for something that rings 2 or 3 times an hour and disturbs us. Interestingly, neither of us are getting any of this junk on our cell phones.

  1. Marc, what does the phone company say about it? Your number is new, perhaps it was previously owned by someone who got these calls.

You should ask them to remove you from the “street directory,” a special phone directory most of us never see. Sold to businesses for a fee, the “Street Address Directory” (sometimes called the “Reverse Directory”) lists you by address, rather than name. Companies use this directory to canvas an area by phone. If you remove yourself from this directory, sales calls will be nearly eliminated! Just call your local telephone company business office and ask to be removed from the Street Address Directory. There is no charge and they are required to remove you upon request.

I was amazed at how effective this one simple step was. It eliminated all but a tiny fraction of the calls I used to receive.

An unlisted number is even better.

  2. Marc
It’s an ill wind, as they say. I have been getting calls from 702 835 0091 and couldn’t work out who it was. Now I see you’re getting them to, so it’s obviously a telemarketer. I won’t worry anymore.
Incidentally, I get very few now but have been on the ‘don’t call registry’ for a year or so. I agree with Moe. Do as suggested and most of them (except perhaps 702 835 0091) will disappear.

  3. Mark. If you get any calls from 702-835-xxxx, please note the caller ID number, transcribe as much as you can from the prerecorded message, press whatever digit is required to get to a live representative, and see if you can get a number that you can call them back at. Tell them that you need whatever it is they’re selling, but that you were just about to walk out the door so you will call them right back. Do whatever it takes to get a call-back number and then post it here. These calls are in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and you can sue them for at least $1,500 per call if you can get a call-back number from them.

  4. My number is unlisted and have gone on do not call registry and still get these f***ing calls. They keep calling early morning or late at night, waking up my little kids. it doesn’t work

  5. Hey Marc, I am now being hounded by that YPOR 440-331-6633 number. Any idea who they are & how to get rid of them? I’ve been on the do not call list for years now. Altho I have recently switched from Verizon to Cable telephone, my number hasn’t changed. I thought all you had to do was register the phone number. Maybe I should re-register. Any advice would be great… Thanks!

  6. I’ve been getting hang up phone calls from the same YPOR number as well now for a week. My phone number is only 2 weeks old. Some bloggers have talked about inquiries about phone books, but everytime I answer the line goes dead. If I say nothing, nothing happens until I talk. At least 2-3 times per day this call comes in. Are you still getting the calls?

  7. Jody, I finally sat there for like 3 minutes SCREAMING in their ear & they FINALLY answered me… my mom used to have a whistle & when no one said HELLO on the 1st ring, she’d blow it in their ear… works GREAT when u KNOW someone is there *u can hear them but they’re not talking to you yet* anyways, when I FINALLY got a reply, they’re from teh Yellow Pages… & they wanted to do a survey… I told them I was on the do not call list & hung up on them I then called Charter *my phone is NOW thru my cable* & screamed at them for allowing it to happen… the lady did something & said after 24 hours tehy’ll stop… NOW the only calls I get are from Charter looking for Deb E… *Deb E… had my phone number prior to me & I’ve had this number for around 3 years now or so… I’ve only had Charter for 1 month… go figure…

  8. I too have been getting calls from YPOR. I just called them back and got no answer. My phone is through the cable company and I am going to call them. I have had this number less than two weeks!

  9. I wanted to follow-up on this. Shortly after I posted here, I searched and found another long list of similar complaints. Someone mentioned a phone number for a woman named Mary Phillips and said she is a supervisor for the company who makes these calls. I think the YPOR is related to the Yellow Pages. Anyway out of desperation I called the number and left a polite but firm request on the voicemail to remove my phone number from their ineffective marketing and the calls stopped. Not even one. See if you can find the number; sorry I didn’t keep it.

  10. Thanks for the info. I got a new phone number from my cable company a month ago and have been bombarded with calls from YPOR – 440-331-6633 even though I also am now on the no-call list.

  11. We just bought a mountain home (second home) in Granby, CO, a town of about 1600 people. From day 1, we have been getting calls from this YPOR, and immediate hang-ups. We live in Denver, and have been unlisted there for years, and we have never received calls from this organization.

  12. I have been getting that YPOR 440-331-6633 call 5+ times a day. Today must have been my lucky day. I answered it by pressing talk and listening (hey, they are paying for the call, not me. The longer it takes for them to disconnect, maybe they’ll learn a lesson $$$.) It took a while, but someone actually answered and offered me a free 2 week subscription to the N.Y. TIMES NEWSPAPER!!!!!!!!! I asked the lady if she knew what name was coming up on the caller I.D.? She said why and I explained about the annoying calls. She apologized, and said they have been having problems with the phone system. I hope they never call again. GOOD LUCK!!!!! I KNOW THIS CAN HELP EVERYONE-GLAD TO HELP!!!

  13. Interesting. We recently changed to cable phone and have been getting 4-5 calls a day from YPOR 440-208-1035. I have answered a few times in order to do the grueling task of talking to a person to end the calls. Nothing doing. SO I finally caller id called them back and was presented with a voicemail system asking me to confirm my phone number in order to be removed from their list. Shyeah, like I am really going to pop my number into an automated system related to this harassing group? IF you wait on the line.. just as when you wait on the line when they call… silence and the you get hung up on. It’s maddening.

  14. There’s another number to add to this list of annoying YPOR phone numbers … 414-208-1035. they hang up even if you dont say anything…… i tried to call the number back and got three different messages… one was that the nextel number i was trying to call was no longer in service, which was obviously not true because i had called it at least twice before that message, the other two messages i got were, all circuits are busy plz call back, and this number has been disconnected. It’s most likely not a person. Some companies use automated services that route through other/disconnected/unclaimed numbers and that is what shows up on the caller id. There’s no way to track them as far as i know without paying for a search on the number you recieved. This will most likely not do you any good as obviously they do not have only one number and the messages that several hundreds of people have gotten when they called the number back have been different. if someone knows who they are, please for the love of god and everyone else, share that info!

  15. So it’s not just me! I recently changed from Verizon to cable service and the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. My caller id frequently says YPOR, but it also says Milwaukee, WI with the same number. However, the number I’m getting isn’t the 440 etc. It’s 414-208-1035. I’ve never answered it, so I was surprised to read so many people say that when they did, there was either no response or they were hung up on. Isn’t the purpose of a telemarketing call to either sell you something or have you answer some sort of survey? What is the point of calling so many people so many times if they’re not even going to respond? That makes this even more maddening!

  16. Day 1 – Got a phone # from Comcast.
Day 3 – Got calls from YPOR.

What is the point if they’re not selling me something? How does this benefit them? Would love to know.

  17. This is has been going on with me since we got our new residence and phone number. We are getting calls from the 414-208-1035. I registered us on the National Do Not Call registry on May 6th.

  18. Like everyone else -we have been getting calls from YPOR everyday. Once they called at 9:30PM!! I yelled at them & told them
    1. I have a baby that they just woke up and
    2. I am on the do not call list. You know what, I saw on the call id that they just called back the next day….
I called them & it was a recording so I left my # to get off the list – it says it will take 5 business days. If not the cable company is getting a phone call next!!!

  19. this is a company called verafast they are a firm that helps companies with telemarketing solutions. They are simply verifying that you will answer the calls. Go to their website at http://www.verafast.com there is a number there to remove your phone number from their call list. Do this and then go to the FTC website and file a complaint against these morons. A call to the cable company about them is not a bad idea either.

  20. Im soooo glad its not just me. I am going crazy with the YPOR calls. Early in the morning, late at night, saturdays, sundays, you name it. It only started happening once I switched to Comcast. Its insane!!!

  21. This is a telemarketing company. Based on what I’ve read on other websites, the company is named VER-A-FAST. You can contact them to have your number removed at 800-327-8463. If you continue to be called by this company, contact your phone service provider and have the number blocked. – Noga Delshad

  22. I have a new phone number and YPOR is calling several times a day and night, and no one answers the phone. It is truly frustrating . I also registered to do not call list but iam within the 30 days wait. I can not believe this intrusion can be legal. this is a total violation of rights

  23. YPOR is Yellow Pages Opinion Research.

    Do two things:
    * Register at donotcall.gov
    * Patiently receive these calls till you hear someone on the other end. Ask them to remove you from the list and not call you again.

  24. I GET THE SAME NUMBER IT IS THE YELLOW PAGES WANTING YOU TO ANSWER A QUESTIONARE
