Roller Derby

Last weekend we went to a roller derby match at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco. The Bay City Bombers vs. the L.A Thunderbirds. From looking at the Bay City Bombers web site, I was definitely expecting something kind of weird, but it surpassed my expectations. Within about 30 seconds of it starting, I had feelings that it was fake. Within 5 or 10 minutes, it was so over the top that it was obviously fake and people all around us in the audience were laughing. Basically professional wrestling on wheels. People flying over turnbuckles and losing their helmets on practically every round (hmmm, crappy little helmets with elastic chin straps – it’s almost like they want their helmets to come off :-)) Fights after pretty much every play. A manager jabbing another player with a cane. The announcer teasing the players and incessantly hawking concessions. One player hitting another with a steel chair, instantly bringing me back to my old days of watching WWF on Saturday mornings, with Rowdy Rodney Piper performing the same exact move, albeit in a Scottish kilt. The miraculous come from behind win in the last few seconds of the game.

Luckily, friends of ours managed to score these tickets at an auction for $2 for 12 tickets and for that price, it was an amusing way to spend an evening. I noticed on the way in, that our VIP seats normally go for $25. If I had paid $25, I think I’d probably be pretty pissed.

I have a handful of crappy cameraphone pictures on Flickr, but I’ve got some videos that I’ve yet to go through and upload. Those should be much more amusing. I should go through them and pick out the good ones (hopefully the quality is decent) and convert from 3GP to MP3.
