OS X: VirtueDesktops

VirtueDesktops is a nice freeware app for OS X that does multiple desktops with neat effects including the famous “spinning cube” effect. Easy to use and unobstrusive, you can use hotkeys to switch between desktops and also Cmd+Tab switching automatically switches you to the desktop on which the target app resides. It’s surprisingly nice to simply use it along with Cmd+Tab as it lets you zoom each app on its own desktop and thus reduce screen clutter.

  1. I gave this a try and was underwhelmed. The basic functionality was nice, but there were odd quirks that rendered it too annoying to keep using. For example, frequently when I switched apps & desktops, the wrong window would be on top (i.e., not the last one I used). And, if I started an application while on a desktop other than the one that app was bound to, it didn’t switch desktop (although the new app did have focus). So, I’d have to change apps, then change back to the new one to start using. Plus, the program would crash periodically, leaving most of my application inaccessible until I restarted VirtueDesktop.
