1 GB of RAM in our Windows laptop

My wife’s Windows XP laptop has been pretty slow lately and I haven’t gotten around to doing the old Windows ritual of backing up the data and reinstalling Windows from scratch, so I bought 1 GB of RAM from a coworker and installed it Tuesday night.

It might’ve helped a bit, but I think I still need to do the fresh Windows install.

What do you think are the chances that this routine won’t be necessary with Vista?

  1. Having used Vista (albeit for a short period of time) I cannot say that I am confident that it is going to avoid the all-too-familiar reinstallation song and dance. The operating system as a whole still doesn’t have a solid idea of how to keep users from interfering with system activities and the like, and even worse, its requirements for system resources are absolutely horrid.

I installed it on my laptop:

I have a laptop—a Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064. It has an Intel Celeron M processor, running at 1.6 GHz. It has 1.5 GB of RAM, and 120 GB of disk space. It is a good computer. There is no reason for this machine to become obsolete in the next decade, other than certain members of the industry (e.g., Microsoft and other commercial entities) putting out end-user software that wastes more CPU cycles and system memory than they should. Windows XP dramatically increased the requirement for memory in computer systems, and Vista will do this again, while also dramatically increasing the graphics hardware the average user needs to function. This is insane, is it not?

It was painfully slow on what I would call a modern system, and I see no reason to evaluate it further. Some seeking around for other reviews of it also shows that reviewers weren’t all that happy with the system—compared with Ubuntu, and that’s saying something. I think that Vista is best left alone, to be honest.

  2. The site looks great ! Thanks for all your help ( past, present and future !)
