This morning was strange because when I got to work I was greeted by a new HP LP2465 24″ widescreen LCD monitor. This was strange because I had not asked for a new monitor. Most of my colleagues also had new monitors, so it seems that the IT department did a mass deployment over the weekend, which is weird. Cool, but weird.

Treo 650 with short antenna from TreoAntenna.com
As previously mentioned, my Treo 650 antenna broke and for the past week I’ve been using it with an improvised antenna using an alligator clip.
My short antenna from TreoAntenna.com arrived the other day. It only took 5 minutes and a TORX T5 screwdriver to install it. As far as I can tell, the reception is just as good as it was with the original antenna.
Treo 650 improvised antenna
A few days ago, my Treo 650 fell on to pavement and the antenna snapped off. I ordered a new short antenna from TreoAntenna.com but in the meantime, I’ve managed to get good reception by clipping an alligator clip with a short length of wire on to the point on the circuit board where the antenna connects. Originally, I had the other clip connected to the antenna itself, but it fell off and I realized that reception was just as good without it.
Battery
The battery on our alarm went low a few days ago. The replacement that I ordered from Pacific Battery Systems arrived today. It took all of about 10 seconds to put it in. Which is funny to me, because the manual for the alarm had advised that we call a professional. Apparently they think of consumers as morons.

This tutorial shows how you can back up and restore hard drives and partitions with Ghost4Linux. Ghost4Linux is a Linux Live-CD that you insert into your computer; it contains hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tools similar to Norton Ghost.

Strange beeping
Last night we were watching TV and all of a sudden we heard a strange beeping sound coming from somewhere in our house. My first thought was that perhaps we were being poisoned by carbon monoxide since we had just started up our fireplace for the first time in a while. It turned out to be our alarm system, which had a low battery. It uses a large 12 volt, 4 amp hour sealed lead acid (SLA) battery for backup for AC power. I looked for it online and had a little bit of trouble locating the exact battery that we have (a “Rocket ES4-12” from Global & Yuasa), but eventually found one that seems to be compatible, with a slightly different model number, a Yuasa NP4-12. I just ordered it.
