Just noticed that my desktop icons had disappeared on my PowerBook.
I managed to fix it with: open -a /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app
I guess Finder crashes sometimes and doesn’t always restart itself.

I have this happening every week or so with my Mac Pro and the latest version of Leopard (10.5.2 as I type this, more than a year after your post).
Never happens on my Macbook Pro, though, with the same version number. I just have the odd feeling it’s got something to do with my peripherals, or external drives, or something. I’ve googled and googled and checked Apple Discussions.. and found no *real* fixes.
As you say here, best thing I’ve found is a reboot or a restart of Finder, which works most of the time. But unfortunately I’ve also seen (rare) times when even that doesn’t work.
