inkblot: GNOME ink level utility

I’ve posted recently (here and here) about libinklevel and mentioned the simple command-line client, simply called “ink“.

For the graphically-inclined, there’s a pretty nice GNOME app called “inkblot” that an put a status icon in your tray and you can click it to get more detailed information.

inkblot

My printer has 6 ink cartridges, but inkblot only shows levels for the cyan, magenta, and yellow. Presumably it is rolling cyan/photo cyan and magenta/light magenta into one number and it seems to be doing this by taking the lesser number in each pair.

Last day at Yahoo

After 5 years and two great teams (Yahoo! Personals and the Tiger Team), I’m moving on from Yahoo. The feeling is hard to describe. Naturally in 5 years, you get really comfortable with a place and you get to know a lot of people. In the last week, though, it’s been particularly striking to me to realize how many people have had an impact on me and vice-versa. Five years. Five years of triumphs, celebrations, hard work, stressful times, learning, video games (Halo 1!), and friendships.

OK, there are some things I won’t miss. Like trying to park my car in the morning and gcc 2.95. But then there are a lot of other things and people that I will miss.

Where am I going? After a brief vacation (this weekend!), I will start at VMware on Monday. You’ll be hearing about that shortly…

Mac OS X programming question

Is it possible to use DYLD\_INSERT\_LIBRARIES without using DYLD\_FORCE\_FLAT\_NAMESPACES (which has nasty side effects)?

I wanted to use the former for a port of tsocks (which needs to intercept socket calls) but I’ve had to also use the latter and that seems to crash GUI apps like Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. I’m afraid tsocks is only marginally useful if it only works for console apps.
