One cool feature of Emacs is that it lets you directly edit the contents of various archive files like .zip, .tar, .lzh, .jar, etc. Out of the box, though, Emacs isn’t setup to edit .xpi files automatically, but it’s easy to correct that since .xpi files are just .zip files in disguise and Emacs is eminently customizable…

Mozex on the Mac
Mozex is a neat little Firefox extension that among other things, lets you edit
the contents of textareas with an external editor of your choosing.
We use TWiki a lot at work and I hate
editing in the little browser textarea so this extension is really useful to
me. I used it for a while on Windows, but then a few Firefox versions and a
PowerBook later, I could not find a Mozex that would work (the official version hasn’t been updated in
years). Until yesterday…
Firefox 1.5.0.1 out
From http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/releases/1.5.0.1.html:
February 1, 2006. Firefox 1.5.0.1 is a stability and security update that is part of our ongoing program to provide a safe Internet experience for our customers. We recommend that all users upgrade to this latest version.
Here’s what’s new in Firefox 1.5.0.1:
- Improved stability.
- Improved support for Mac OS X.
- International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is) is now enabled.
- Fixes for several memory leaks.
- Several security enhancements.
This sounds like a must-have upgrade, especially if you’re from Iceland! 🙂
Yahoo! Mail now supports WYSIWYG HTML email in Firefox
Xinha Here! Awesome Firefox extension
Great Firefox extension.
Xinha Here allows you to right click on any textarea in a page and select Xinha Here to fire up a nice WYSIWYG HTML editor in a separate window. Bolding, italics, bulleted lists, links, images, etc. are all supported and there are keyboard shortcuts in addition to toolbar icons. Do your editing as you see fit and then when you hit OK, the corresponding HTML is pasted into the textarea (unfortunately, it seems to get paste in as one long line, it would be nice if it broke my bullet lists on to separate lines, but oh well…maybe the next version).
This is a great way for me to get WYSIWYG editing for my blog postings without having to use a WordPress 2.0 beta (which may not be stable or might have security issues) and I get this WYSIWYG editing capability for other uses too.
Great stuff.
